Guidelines for Funding

Specialist Research Workshops

ARNAM Specialist Research Workshops should be forums to exchange innovative ideas and present current results of frontier research in interdisciplinary materials areas, to provide specialist research reviews and in-depth tutorials on selected research topics to support the training of research students and early career researchers and to enhance interdisciplinary interactions and collaboration among network members, particularly among research students and early career researchers.

Applications will be assessed several times each year.

Application Closing Dates for 2009 are as follows:

  1. Friday, 6 March 2009
  2. Friday, 22 May 2009
  3. Friday, 7 August 2009

Proposals seeking support for Specialist Research Workshops are expected to satisfy the following requirements:

  • The topic and content of the workshop are of high scientific quality and the topic is both timely and within the research areas covered by ARNAM.
  • A preliminary program, including the names of invited speakers, venue and date, is provided.
  • The venue for the workshop should be a low-cost location, e.g. university campus or budget motel or cabin accommodation.
  • More than 50% of the total cost of the workshop would normally be from other sources.
  • More than 50% of the workshop attendees would normally be expected to be research students and early career researchers representing a broad range of universities and research institutions across the country.

The proposed workshop can also be combined with visits of internationally distinguished researchers, and take the form of a satellite event related to a major conference that has the attendance of many network members.

It would normally be expected that the ARNAM funding for individual workshops should not exceed $5,000. ARNAM funding can support travel, accommodation and subsistence for presenters and participants, with preference given to students and ECRs, as well as venue costs and workshop materials.

A report of the workshop (including the final program and attendance of the workshop) and actual budget is required three months after the workshop is completed.

For proposals that do not satisfy above requirements, the Events Subcommittee may liaise with proposers to provide guidance for improvement.
